The Department of Internal Medicine is the largest of its kind in South Africa and graduates more physicians and physician subspecialists than
any other similar department in the country.
It has a long history of excellence in clinical care, as well as in undergraduate and postgraduate education. The department is spread over 3 academic hospitals,
namely Chris Hani Baragwanath, Helen Joseph & Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospitals and in addition has a satellite training site at Klerksdorp hospital.
It also provides outreach services to Edenvale, Sebokeng and Leratong hospitals.
The strength of Internal Medicine at WITS, is its large & diverse clinical training platform, allowing exposure to a vast number of patients for teaching of medical students
as well as postgraduate students, the majority of whom are medical registrars. Our teaching programs are designed to encourage excellence in clinical skills and to promote
basic and clinical research. Importantly, our program is very much dedicated to meeting the health care needs of South Africa. Also, the department is committed to develop
academic opportunities for our trainee physicians.
Research enjoys a major focus within the Department of Internal Medicine and it has a number of NRF rated scientists within its ranks. It also houses four Research Entities.
The unique blend between the well-developed clinical & research programs as well as the rich clinical resources within the department create an environment that encourages a
vibrant and enjoyable learning experience.
